Medicinal, Not Magic Mushrooms: Supporting Healthy Aging in Dogs and Cats

As a holistic vet and homeopath, I would say that the majority of my patients are older dog and cats, whose caregivers are looking for complementary medicine in order to improve their health and wellbeing. They come with a long medical history , multiple health issues, slowing immune system and a body that has to work harder than before.
And many times, I introduce them to medicinal mushrooms, which are, in my knowledge, a wonderful approach to promote health. But some pet parents sometimes make a small confusion or get a bit worried about their pets taking mushrooms….so, I would like to emphasize a quick note before we go further: when clients hear "medicinal mushrooms," some understandably picture psilocybin, the psychoactive compound in "magic mushrooms." These are entirely different things. Species like turkey tail, reishi, lion's mane, and cordyceps contain no psilocybin and no psychoactive compounds at all—there's no "high," no altered perception, nothing acting on the brain's serotonin receptors. Instead, their active compounds (beta-glucans, triterpenes, polysaccharides) work on the immune system and gut, at the cellular level, in a way that's closer to a targeted nutraceutical than anything mind-altering. So when I prescribe mycotherapy for a pet, it sits in the same category as herbal medicine and nutraceuticals, not in the category of psychedelic substances. With that distinction clear, let's look at what's actually happening in aging pets, and how these mushrooms help.
A recent review in the Journal of Veterinary Science shows what many of us observe in practice. The authors describe aging in dogs and cats as a biological process, not just a matter of age. It is influenced by factors like immunosenescence (the decline of immune function with age), inflammaging (a low-grade chronic inflammation that occurs as pets age), and sarcopenia (progressive muscle loss). These processes work together, increasing the risk of multiple health problems in senior pets (Armstrong & Oh, 2025). A related review from the same authors argues that, while aging is biological, it isn't set in stone. Factors such as nutrition, activity, gut health, and targeted nutritional support can meaningfully change an animal's aging path and extend their healthspan, with quality of life. (Oh, Armstrong & Han, 2025).
Though neither review specifically mentions medicinal mushrooms, they clearly outline the biological issues that mycotherapy aims to address like a poorly functioning immune system, a low-grade inflammation body or and a leaking gut. In this context, turn to medicinal mushrooms in my work. Mushrooms like Turkey tail (Trametes versicolor), Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum), Lion's mane (Hericium erinaceus), and Cordyceps (Cordyceps militaris) among others, contain beta-glucans and polysaccharides that attach to receptors on immune cells, especially macrophages and natural killer (NK) cells, increasing their activity without overburdening the immune system. This is particularly important for the aging pets, whose NK cell function declines while inflammatory markers rise, and whose bodies have a hard time identifying abnormal or infected cells (Armstrong & Oh, 2025).
Chronic illness complicates the situation, often keeping the immune system in a state of low-grade, exhausting activation. Medicinal mushrooms, due to their polysaccharides seem to support the regulatory arm of the immune response, helping it react appropriately rather than overreacting or becoming inactive. Additionally, since gut health is now recognized as crucial to both inflammaging and immune function in aging pets (Oh, Armstrong & Han, 2025), mushrooms like Lion's mane, which primarily works through the gut, might help improve healthspan through a different way.
Among medicinal mushrooms, Turkey tail (Trametes versicolor) has the most direct clinical evidence for use in dogs. In a controlled trial, fifteen client-owned dogs with naturally occurring hemangiosarcoma received daily doses of the Turkey tail compound. The dogs on the highest dose had the longest recorded survival times for this disease, with delayed metastasis visible on monthly imaging and no harmful biochemical side effects. PSP and PSK (the main polysaccharide-peptide complexes from Turkey tail) primarily work by activating macrophages, NK cells, and dendritic cells, which are the immune surveillance cells that tend to decrease with age and chronic disease.
Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum), on its turn, has been studied in healthy adult beagles at doses ranging from 5 to 15 mg/kg. The higher dose significantly improved phagocytic activity, increased the presence of MHC-II on immune cells, and raised antibody levels after vaccination, which are all indicators of a more responsive and well-coordinated immune system, with no negative impact on digestion or overall health. In a separate meta-analysis of animal studies, Reishi consistently reduced total cholesterol and triglycerides, which is important for many older or chronically ill pets also dealing with metabolic stress alongside a fatigued immune system.
Lion's mane (Hericium erinaceus) is not as directly associated with immunity, but its impact on gut health is likely very relevant for aging or chronically ill pets, given that much immune function occurs in the gut. A 16-week controlled feeding trial involving eighteen aged dogs found that it significantly improved gut bacteria balance, favorably shifting the Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes ratio and reducing pro-inflammatory bacterial populations, while also raising antioxidant and tissue-repair markers in the blood. A better-balanced gut often leads to an immune system with less chronic inflammation to combat.
Last, but not least, Cordyceps (Cordyceps militaris) has more emerging veterinary data, showing promise for immune response. Animal-model research indicates that cordycepin, one of its active compounds, enhanced the immune response to a commercial rabies vaccine without negative side effects. Other studies highlight antioxidant and endocrine-supporting benefits, particularly for animals under chronic metabolic stress. It is also well-known for being a great support for convalescent and elderly animals, supporting strength and helping recovery.
As with all aspects of holistic medicine, mushrooms are not a standalone solution. In my practice, I rarely use medicinal mushrooms on their own, as I usually combine them with the animal's homeopathic treatment, selecting species to fit specific needs, for example: Turkey tail for cancer or immune support, Reishi for managing inflammation and metabolism, Lion's mane for gut health or cognitive aging, and Cordyceps for energy, renal, hepatic and endocrine support.
For aging pets whose immune systems need a steady, well-coordinated response rather than a strong push, or for chronically ill patients whose bodies have been overworked for months or years, the medicinal mushrooms offer a great support. If your senior pet or one with a chronic condition could benefit from this type of support, consider discussing it with a holistic vet who can recommend the right mushroom, form, and dose for their unique needs.
